History of the KCRBA
In 1984, a young rabbit breeder by the name of Don Laughlin came up with an idea to start an all-breed rabbit club. He shared this idea with his fellow rabbit enthusiast Armando Cabrera. Within weeks the two teenagers presented their idea to a couple of adult rabbit breeders. News spread amongst close rabbit friends circle and thus the club started!
The first state of club officers, aka Charter officers, were:
President - Dennis Caruthers
Vice Pres. - Bill Rawls
Secretary - Armando Cabrera
Treasurer - Fred Cremer
Directors - Terry Wyckoff
Phyllis Caruthers
The name "Kern County Rabbit Breeders Association" was not our original name, it was adopted from an earlier club in Bakersfield that existed and folded in the 1950's. Fred Cremer, advisor, club mentor, and lifetime member (now deceased) had stationary from the previous club, and being a poor new club, it was decided to take on the name since we wouldn't need to buy new stationary for at least a year or two... plus the name was an appropriate fit!
Although the primary location for the KCRBA has always been Bakersfield, CA, the first charter was actually made out to the location of Wasco, CA, home of the clubs charter secretary Armando Cabrera. This was done because there was already an all-breed club in exsistance called the "Golden State Rabbit Breeders Association". Per ARBA rules, there could be no more then 1 all-breed within a 30 mile radius. The only solution was to vote in a secretary the member who lived the furthest distance and whom would be willing to take on the job. 16 year old Armando Cabrera took on the position, which required a chance in the by-laws to allow a 16 year old to hold an office! Armando is till a member of the club today!
Over the years, the club has had it's ups and downs. However, due to a group of dedicated members, the club continues to survive and is starting to thrive.
